      Malta National Day

    • Malta's National Day commemorates the day when this small Mediterranean country became independent in 1964.

Malta was ruled by the famous Knights of Malta from 1530 to 1798. But, following the Napoleonic Wars, this small country was ruled by London (1802). It was not until 1964 that Malta became independent. At first, Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom was the head of state, and in 1974, Malta adopted the republican regime.
