JEAN MONNET (1888-1979)

A French statesman, Jean Monnet is regarded as one of the founding fathers of Europe. He was the inspiration behind the Schuman Plan, the aim of which was to get two former enemies, France and Germany, to pool their coal and steel together into one organisation. The Plan led to the Treaty of Paris in 1951, which established the ECSC. Jean Monnet was also the first president of the High Authority of the ECSC, from 1952 to 1955.
