    • International Day of Sport for Development and Peace is an opportunity to highlight the contribution of sport to the achievement of the Millennium regarding development.


      It also promotes the idea that sports help to ensure peace and development and also the contribution of sports to create a climate of tolerance and understanding.

    • The theme of the year is “Cultural Heritage & Sustainable Tourism”. It was chosen in relation to the United Nations International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development.

    • 23 April is a symbolic date for world literature. It is on this date in 1616 that Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died. It is also the date of birth or death of other prominent authors, such as Maurice Druon, Haldor K.Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla and Manuel Mejía Vallejo.
