      Lithuania National Day

    • February 16th is National Day of Lithuania, in commemoration of the founding of the state in 1918.

Lithuania lost its administrative autonomy with the Union of Lublin in 1569. It was thus incorporated in the Polish kingdom. Then when Poland splitted at the end of the eighteenth century, Lithuania was annexed by the Tsars in 1795, but resisted all Russian attacks (anti-Russian uprisings of 1830-1831 and 1863-1864).

Even occupied by the Germans in 1915, the Council of Lithuania declared the restoration of independent Lithuania and eventually declared its independence on February 16th, 1918.
